BIMM Live 2018 Irish Music

BIMM Live x MNÁSOME: Saoirse

Next up in our series of interviews ahead of BIMM Live 2018 is the immensely talented vocalist and songwriter, Saoirse. On the back of her debut release, ‘Strong’, which proves her to be one to watch for the coming year, Saoirse plans to spend the summer writing and arranging new material with her band. With some exciting things planned over the coming months be sure to keep and eye out for her…

How did you first get into music?

I have been singing for as long as I can remember. My Mam is a massive music fan so I was always surrounded by it and MTV was never turned off in our house. My music teacher always encouraged me in secondary school which really pushed me to pursue music. I took part in talent competitions and local gigs which led to lots of practice where I learned a lot about my voice and performing. I knew from then on that music was all that I wanted to do!

Who are you listening to at the moment?

I am listening to Jordan Rakei, Tom Misch, Jazmine Sullivan and Andreya Triana a lot lately.

What drives your to write and perform?

My love for music, inspiration from other artists and being able to use it as a form of expression drives me to write and perform. The fact that I could never see myself doing anything other than music is also a major factor.

What women inspire you in your music career?

Artists like Lauryn Hill and SZA who just say it like it is. I have a lot of respect for the honesty and empowerment I find in their songwriting. The Irish music scene is bursting with such diverse talent and you have artists like LAOISE and Loah that are having great success at the minute for being their true selves. They represent female Irish talent which to me is encouraging and inspiring.

Who among your fellow BIMM graduates would you recommend going to see at this year’s BIMM Live?

I would recommend going to see RUTH and St.Bishop! They both always have a great set together.
