Interview with Eve Belle Ahead of Project Arts Centre Show

Donegal Singer-Songwriter, Eve Belle spoke to MNÁSOME ahead of her upcoming show at The Project Arts Centre in Dublin this month. Eve Belle talks about her early experiences of music, her inspiration for songwriting and what people can expect from her upcoming Dublin performance.

At what age did you get into music? 

I’ve always been into music in a lot of ways. I can’t really remember a time I wasn’t demanding that a certain song be played in the car, or listening to anything I could get my hands on with my walkman (serious throwback). I got my first guitar for Christmas when I was about 10, but I guess I seriously started playing and writing things that weren’t horrifically embarrassing around the age of 14 or 15.

Where do you draw inspiration from?

Most of my songs are love songs of the depressing variety, so my main inspirations are heartbreak and loss. I find them to be the most earnest emotions and there’s just this over spill of emotional energy that heartbreak generates, and it’s pretty cathartic to channel that into music. It’s a great medium for introspection as well, I often notice things about certain situations only after I’ve written a song about them, the subconscious shows up in the lyrics sometimes so it can be a bit of a revelation.

What bands are you listening to at the moment?

I am a massive fan of Julien Baker, I absolutely adore her lyrics and I love a good cry, so she’s perfect as far as I’m concerned. I’m also having a bit of a Talking Heads revival at the moment, which is a lot of fun as well.

What has been your favourite show to play so far?

I was on tour with Frightened Rabbit last year and that was my first real experience touring, but getting up and performing in a different place every night to new people was really life-affirming. They are incredible as well, so it was great to get to go to 9 of their gigs in a row.

What can people expect from your upcoming show at The Projects Arts Centre in Dublin? 

There will be a lot of new material that I’ve been coming at from a different angle production-wise, so I’m really excited to share that with people. The live sound isn’t as stripped back and acoustic as it used to be, so it’s been a lot of fun to work with the songs and expand them sonically. That’s what this show will be introducing. A lot of the set is from my upcoming EP, which is exciting for me to share as well.
